Pope bemoans ‘uncontrolled’ tourism.Thursday 27 June 2002
Pope John Paul II has this week spoken out at the environmental damage caused by ‘uncontrolled tourism’. Speaking at the Roman Catholic Church World Day of Tourism, the Pope said "A certain uncontrolled tourism has contributed, and continues to contribute to such destruction, caused also by tourism facilities built without plans to respect the impact on the environment." In his wide-ranging speech, the Pope also commented the lack of respect that built-up resort areas show to the traditions of local areas and communities, and of the forgotten reasons behind original tourism. Earlier this month the Pope signed a declaration for an ‘environmental ethos’ with Patriarch Bartholomew (Green Consumer Guide 11/6/02) which outlined green responsibilities.
