Water saving potential revealedMonday 03 September 2007
Water use in the European Union could be reduced by as much as 40%, according to a new report from the European Commission. The figure, almost twice as much as previously estimated, has been released ahead of the Informal Environment Council in Lisbon, which will focus on the issues of water scarcity and drought conditions.
Earlier this year the Commission presented a number of policy options based on improving the management of water in region whilst ensuring availability for ‘human, economic and social’ activities.
“In a world plagued by increasing water scarcity and droughts we must urgently put an end to the tremendous waste of water across Europe,” said Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas. “Water efficiency must be at the core of our policies. Enormous water savings are possible. Water saving behaviours by European citizens and industry must be actively encouraged and promoted.”
