Norway blocks hormone-disrupting detergents.

Wednesday 17 October 2001

The Norwegian government has banned most uses of several industrial surfactants which affect human hormones. The use of the chemicals has been scaled down in the EU over the last decade via voluntary industrial measures, though this represents the first outright ban. Other nations are expected to follow. The surfactants in question are octyl phenol, nonyl phenol and nonyl phenol ethoxylates. Implemented at the end of the year, the ban comes after a recommendation by the country’s national pollution agency.
