Anti-globalisation protester José Bove has been jailed for 14 months for destroying a genetically modified crop trial. The sentence also takes into account Bove’s previous misdemeanours of a similar nature, which date back to 1999.
Bove, a farmer, has led various protests against fast food chains and GM concerns in his native France, and served six weeks of a three month jail term earlier this year for damaging a McDonalds outlet. Bove is leading member of the militant farming group Confederation Paysanne. The sentence may not be indicative of EU authorities stance on GM crop destruction, rather Bove’s individual roll-call of persistent offending. Most EU member state governments are currently conducting GM crop trials to determine consumer and biodiversity safety before a commercial market may be introduced. Public opinion remains highly against any GM introduction in Europe. |
