Blair heads to Johannesburg.
2002-08-29 Prime Minister Tony Blair and his delegation jet out to join the World Summit in Johannesburg this week, intent on formulating an international action plan on issues such as sustainable development, poverty and climate change. Other ministers in the party are Environment Minister Michael Meacher, DEFRA Secretary of State Margaret Beckett, Secretary of State for International Development Claire Short and Deputy PM John Prescott. The Prime Minister is scheduled to address the Summit on Monday September 2nd and Claire Short will lead a seminar on integrating sustainable development the following day. The conference has received criticism for issues ranging from the high level of corporate influence to the quality of meals served in delegates’ hotels. Delegations from 182 nations are attending the Summit, along with corporate representation from 190 companies, various NGOs and lobbying groups.
