Environmentalism is ‘Christian duty’.
2002-06-11 Patriarch Bartholomew, dubbed the ‘Green Pope’ and Pope John Paul II will this week jointly sign a declaration for an ‘environmental ethos’ which includes the assertion that Christians have a particular responsibility for eco-friendliness. The declaration, which will be signed in the Vatican City, is a show of unity between the Catholic and Orthodox churches. Patriarch Bartholomew has long been associated with environmentalism, and has been travelling aboard a ferry periodically during the last seven years spreading the green word in several countries including Greece and Croatia. The Patriarch has ominously claimed that ‘death is approaching on account of trespassing against limits that God placed on our proper use of creation.’
