Green air travel tax planned.

2002-04-04
A tax on flight tickets in the European Union has been proposed by the EC in order to reduce the environmental impact caused by planes. The surcharge would be passed on to passengers, and is currently believed to be an average of £40. The recent emergence of budget and low-fare airlines has seen made air travel the fastest growing source of greenhouse emissions, currently representing around 4% of synthetic global warming. The suggested legislation will be Europe-wide, and may be introduced as soon as 2004. The likely result of the scheme is that airlines will be forced to look at greener solutions, and travellers will be dissuaded from taking non-essential air journeys.
