German nuclear power terrorist fears.

2001-10-11
German Environment Minister Jurgen Trittin yesterday expressed his willingness to shut down nuclear power stations if the government felt a credible threat from terrorists. The government have highlighted nuclear power stations as the most significant target for terrorists in Germany, unlike other nations who see passenger planes as the main danger. The nuclear power industry in Germany is already in something of a winding down process, with 2030 set as the final date for phasing the power stations out. During the weekend, the Philipsburg power plant was forced to temporarily close down due to safety lapses, and this has prompted the latest fears over terrorism. Environmental groups in Germany, who have long battled against the 2030 phase-out date, have somewhat agreed with Trittin, and have demanded a guarantee of safety against a terror threat or an immediate shut-down.
