BA launches carbon offset scheme

2005-09-13
aviationBritish Airways has announced a new environmental programme for its customers to offset carbon emissions from their flights, with contributions going to a green trust. From this week, travelers using BA can donate via the website depending on the length of their trip. Offsetting emissions on return flight from Heathrow to Madrid would cost £5, whereas a long-haul flight from Heathrow to Johannesburg would cost £13.30.

The funds raised through BA’s scheme will go to Climate Care, an organization that invests in sustainable energy projects, around the world. A recent project saw 50,000 energy efficient lamps distributed via school groups in South Africa.

"We are committed to addressing our impact on climate change and our own carbon emissions from aircraft are down by eight per cent since 2000. However, some customers are keen to go beyond this and totally offset the emissions created by their flights. To help them, we are delighted to offer this facility," commented Dr Andrew Sentance, British Airways' chief economist and head of environmental affairs.

Tom Morton, director of Climate Care, said: "At a time when some airlines are burying their heads in the sand over global warming, British Airways is tackling the issue full on with a range of measures - of which this is just one."

BA’s move was praised by the Government, who called for more voluntary corporate environmental action in the industry.

“I urge strongly other airlines to follow this lead,” said Environment Minister Elliot Morley. “People are becoming increasingly concerned about climate change and are keen to play an active role in tackling it. Large organisations have a responsibility to show them how they can do this.”
