UK recycling law passes second reading.

litterThe Municipal Waste Recycling Bill, which proposes a target of 50% household waste recycling by 2010, has passed its second reading in the House of Commons. It is now unlikely that the proposal will face any serious barriers before coming to policy.

The bill, written by Joan Ruddock MP in association with environmental NGO Friends of the Earth, aims to provide a doorstep recycling service for every household in the UK, in a direct attempt to improve the country’s lowly recycling rate and excessive reliance on landfill and incineration options.

Friends of the Earth's Director, Tony Juniper, said: "We are delighted that Joan Ruddock's Municipal Waste Recycling Bill has passed its crucial second reading unopposed. MPs and the Government clearly understand that we must drastically increase the amount of domestic waste that this country recycles. We hope that this Bill will pass through its remaining stages as quickly as possible, so that Britain can finally have a recycling record to be proud of.”

The Municipal Waste Recycling Bill will be discussed by a Committee of MPs before going further.
