Lexus to offer new hybrid form.
2003-01-14 Japanese auto manufacturer Lexus is set to introduce a new version of the petrol/electric hybrid engine which offers improved performance over those currently available. The ‘Hybrid Synergy Drive’ gives the usual hybrid benefits of low emissions and high fuel economy but with dramatically improved performance, power and torque. The system will debut as an option with the forthcoming RX sports utility vehicle in North America, which may appear in the UK during 2003.
The RX will enter the prestige 4X4 market, which includes the popular BMW X5, the Mercedes M-class, Range Rover and the heavily preordered forthcoming Porsche Cayenne. The popularity of low miles per gallon SUVs and light trucks in the US is seen as a major factor behind the country’s high traffic emissions. Hybrid engine vehicles have been available in the UK since 1998, with the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight models, however Lexus’ step up to a four-wheel drive platform signifies the progression and increasing capabilities of the technology.
