 Report slams animal testing

Monday 14 November 2005

dogA new report released ahead of this week’s European Parliament vote on the REACH safety testing programme has slammed the use of animals in tests, claiming that the process is outdated, unreliable and should be replaced by alternative methods. ‘Lethal Business’ by campaign group Animal Aid, describes the level of suffering endured by animals in toxicity tests and the ‘lack of concordance’ between animal test species and human beings. The release of the study has been timed to precede the November 17th vote.

The report also outlines a range of suitable alternatives to animal testing, which can provide what it describes as ‘species specific’ data.

”Animal Aid recognises the need to safeguard human health and to protect the environment from toxic chemicals. But our new report demonstrates that animal toxicity tests fail to provide data that is relevant to people,” explained Andre Menache, Animal Aid’s Scientific Consultant.

“The adoption of advanced non-animal methodologies is an absolute priority. If the REACH strategy goes ahead as currently planned, millions of animals will die agonising and pointless deaths by having chemicals forced down their throat, injected under their skin or squirted into their eyes. It is time we consigned such primitive horrors to the dustbin of history,” added Mr. Menache
