Scotland targets fly-tippersThursday 10 February 2005
The Scottish Executive has announced funding of more than £1m that will be dedicated to combating the environmental blight of fly-tipping, as part of its continuous green improvement. The majority of the funding will go to support the work of the Scottish Fly-Tipping Forum, which offers services such as a complaint hotline and awareness campaign. The Local Environmental Audit and Management System programme (LEAMS), which provides an assessment service for local councils, will also benefit from the backing.
"The number of calls to the Forum's hotline confirms that the Scottish public is fed up with people illegally dumping their rubbish,” said Environment Minister Ross Finnie.
"Fly-tipping is a national eyesore that blights many communities and we are determined to stamp it out. This substantial funding further enforces our commitment to clean up Scotland's environment," he added.
John Summers from Keep Scotland Beautiful said; “The money for the LEAMS programme will ensure continuous improvement in levels of litter across Scotland.”
