B&Q brings in plastic bag taxMonday 01 November 2004
DIY retailer B&Q has introduced a plastic bag levy in its stores in Scotland, in a bid to cut down on waste and pollution.
A Government-introduced levy on plastic bags in Ireland has proven to be successful, and the idea has been suggested by various ministers to be brought into the UK. B&Q’s voluntary decision to charge for the bags in Scotland shows an admirable level of corporate social responsibility, and could indicate a willingness from retailers to make the first move – pre-empting any legislation.
The move was warmly welcomed by environmental groups. "We are delighted that B&Q have taken this decision which will hopefully make people think twice about taking unnecessary plastic bags and so help to reduce waste, litter and pollution,” said Dan Barlow from Friends of the Earth Scotland. "B&Q are right to learn from the evidence from other countries which shows that this is a move which is popular with consumers and effective at reducing waste. After all, it's very easy to take your own bag when you go shopping.”
