Howard met with protest over wind farmWednesday 27 October 2004
Conservative leader Michael Howard was met with a protest as he gave evidence to a public enquiry into the proposed Romney Marsh wind farm development.
The Greenpeace protest, which included a campaigner dressed as a polar bear, involved banners reading “We need this windfarm”.
Mr Howard and other members of his Party are on record as opposing the level of Government support given to developing wind energy. Additionally, the Conservative leader holds the position of Vice Chair of an anti-wind organisation in his Folkestone constituency.
Greenpeace spokesperson Sarah Shoraka said; "If this is Mr Howard's idea of leadership on climate change then the world's threatened species, including many types of bird, really do have a lot to fear, as do us humans. Global warming is already killing 150,000 people a year and things are set to get a lot worse. Without renewable energy schemes like this one we'll see worsening climate change and the construction of new nuclear power stations like the ones at Dungeness."
