Supermarkets make 2004 GM pledgeTuesday 27 January 2004
The UK’s leading supermarkets delivered a further blow to any commercial introduction of GMO foods this week, by pledging to keep their products GM-free throughout 2004.
The study, carried out by gmfoodnews.com, asked if any GM foods, ingredients or derivatives would appear in products from nine of the UK’s most popular supermarket chains. All of the retailers confirmed that they intend to remain gm-free.
Friends of the Earth's GM campaigner Clare Oxborrow commented; “This is another clear signal that there is no market for GM food in the UK. The Government should join the supermarkets in listening to overwhelming public opposition to GM.”
The supermarkets that took part in the investigation included Co-op, Iceland, Marks and Spencer, Safeway, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.
