Prison wins top green awardFriday 05 December 2003
A privately-run prison in Wales has been awarded a prestigious accreditation for environmentally-friendly practice.
Parc Prison in Bridgend achieved the ISO14001 certification through a variety of activities such as recycling, waste minimisation and on-site biodiversity projects. The prison is one of 220 organisations in Wales to reach the ISO14001 standard.
Welsh Economic Development Minister Andrew Davies said; "I am very impressed with how Parc Prison has come a long way in a short time and they way it has brought in environmental practices into the heart of its everyday management of the prison. It is also good to see that prisoners have played their part in achieving this award. Parc is a great example to others and this recognition of its achievements is well deserved."
Jim Mullen, Director of HMP & YOI Parc, added "Securicor (operator of the prison) is committed to making Parc a greener prison, and it's been very encouraging to see the level of enthusiasm from both staff and prisoners in taking our environmental policy forward."
