Green Party fall foul of campaign.Monday 28 July 2003
The Green Party of England and Wales has been targeted by a vicious email campaign, believed to be related to the opposition of a proposed Wal-mart supermarket in Sheffield. Sheffield Green Party’s headquarters received several thousand threatening emails on the issue last week.
The Party believe that their campaign against the building of a Wal-mart store on land owned by Sheffield Wednesday FC is the root of the problem, and the emails are from a minority of Wednesday supporters unhappy with the protest. The Wal-mart venture is seen as a valuable source of cash-flow for the in-the-red football club.
A spokesperson for the Green Party commented on greenparty.org.uk; "Someone is obviously very annoyed at Sheffield Green Party, and there does seem to be a link to the Wal-mart development application. It's possible that a minority of thugs have invented a sort of soccer e-hooliganism, targeted on people they see as threatening their club's future.
Of course the Green Party will continue to oppose the siting of a new Wal-mart store where we believe it will harm local businesses and damage the local economy. We will not be cowed by threats of violence from petty fascists."
