  Wind farm approval granted

Monday 11 August 2008
wind farmPlans to build one of the UK’s largest offshore wind farms have moved a step closer to fruition, with Government approval being granted. The development at Sheringham Shoal off the coast of Norfolk will be a 315MW, 108 turbine facility, making it the fourth largest in the country when fully operational. The wind farm, from Scira Offshore Energy Ltd, will produce enough energy to power some 178,000 homes.

“This new wind farm demonstrates our commitment to dramatically increase the amount of energy we generate from renewable sources, helping to cut the UK’s carbon emissions and secure our energy supplies,” said Energy Secretary John Hutton. “Sheringham Shoal will be the UK’s fourth largest offshore wind farm approved to date and will help provide a significant contribution towards our renewable energy targets.”

Another wind farm proposal, a 75MW onshore development at Middlemoor near Alnwick in Northumberland has also been granted approval, continuing the momentum of the wind energy sector in the UK. Both the Middlemoor and Sheringham Shoal developments have been approved on a conditional basis, and must provide technical solutions to local Air Defence Radar issues.
