Transport operators urged to go green
Tuesday 11 March 2008
Introducing lower carbon technologies throughout the UK’s transport operators could play a major role in reducing the country’s overall emissions, it was claimed this week.
“Tackling carbon emissions from transport remains a challenging issue. For the sake of generations to come we need to research, develop and rapidly adopt low carbon transport technologies,” said Transport Minister Rosie Winterton, speaking at the Yorkshire Green Fleet event. “The Government has an important role to play by supporting the development of new, cleaner technologies – and we are already making progress in a number of ways.”
The minister went on to highlight several sustainable transport projects already underway in the Yorkshire and Humber region, including a scheme between Sheffield Community Transport and Cenex to develop a low-carbon minibus for community transport , and a partnership between Optare in Leeds and Traction Technology Ltd to develop a hybrid bus vehicle with significantly improved carbon performance, among others.
