  Mobile phone mast issue addressed.

Consultation periods between local authorities, companies and communities over mobile phones masts will be extended following recommendations from a new collective guide. Building upon recommendations from an earlier independent report into the subject, the guide was produced by central government, local authorities and mobile phone service providers, and The Independent Expert Group on Mobile Phones (IEGMP) was set up in 1999 to investigate effects of mobiles and associated issues, and produced the benchmark Stewart Report in May 2000, which laid out guidelines for government and industry. One of the main factors documented in the report was an increase in the level of consultation between councils, companies and the public. The National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) recently proposed the adoption of the IEGMP guidelines, prompting this week’s developments. Planning Minister Jeff Rooker commented on pm.gov.uk; "The siting of mobile phone masts can cause concern for local people. This code requires councils, operators and local people to work together in partnership to find the best site and design for each mast. Best practice needs to be spread widely. This new code provides sound advice and guidance for all involved in the sensible siting of mobile phone masts." The massive increase in mobile phone usage in the UK over the last few years has led to growing concern over health issues. This has primarily centred around handset radiation, but radiation from masts has been a constant worry, hence the safety reviews.
