Energy saving proposals backed
Monday 15 September 2008
The Government’s recent proposals on household energy efficiency have been praised by WWF, but the conservation group is calling for more long-term measures to be introduced. The £1bn ‘Home Energy Saving Programme’ contained a wide ranging raft of measures aimed at helping people save money of fuel bills by boosting energy efficiency, and backed several existing schemes on the issue. Despite the welcoming of the proposals, the aims outlined have been viewed as limited by WWF.
“Improving the energy efficiency of our homes has to be a priority for the Government if it is to reduce the UK’s CO2 emissions and address the burning issue of fuel poverty,” said WWF-UK’s Zoe Leader.
“WWF is encouraged by the Government’s aim to insulate all of Britain’s homes by 2020, but at the same time, Gordon Brown needs to look beyond short term solutions for the housing sector and put in place a clear long-term strategy for making all homes achieve their energy efficiency potential by the end of the decade. For many UK homes, insulation alone will not be the answer.”
