Nuclear ‘too little, too late’ – Greenpeace
Wednesday 09 January 2008
Environmental NGO Greenpeace has slammed the ‘low carbon’ claims associated with nuclear power, arguing that any emissions savings achievable through the controversial energy would be ‘too little, too late’. The comments follows indications that a new nuclear programme is to be given the go-ahead in the form of ten new facilities across the country, details of which will be formally outlined later this week.
“Nuclear power can only deliver a 4% cut in carbon emissions some time after 2025,” said Greenpeace Executive Director John Sauven. “That’s too little and too late, while generations to come will be left with an expensive legacy of our nuclear waste to clean up.”
“We need energy efficiency, cleaner use of fossil fuels, renewable and state-of-the-art decentralised power stations like they have in Scandinavia. These technologies have the potential to deliver reliable low carbon energy quicker and cheaper,” added Mr. Sauven.
