  ‘Green’ golfers win funding

Thursday 24 June 2004
golfThe Scottish Golf Environment Group (SGEG), a collective of organisations working to further environmental aspects of golf courses, has been awarded £90,000 by the Scottish Executive.

Work carried out by the group in the last twelve years includes conservation of coastal sand dunes, parkland, ponds and wetland, which in turn helps the biodiversity of birds, mammals, insects and plants

“Our golf courses, although not significant in land mass terms, are important in environmental terms as they comprise areas of greenspace, coastline and lowland heath,” said Deputy Environment Minister Allan Wilson, announcing the grant. “In fact there are 33 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI’s) on golf courses throughout Scotland. Our golf courses are renowned throughout the world for their quality and scenery. The £90,000 which I am providing to SGEG will enable further work to these courses to improve Scotland’s natural and environmental heritage.”

Following the announcement of the funding, Downfield, St Andrews, Gullane and West Linton courses received awards in recognition of their conservation activities.
