Cheaper energy efficient light-bulbs imminent?Mon 17 Sep 2001 |
![]() Lighting Monday 28 February 2010 Wherever lighting is required, the effects of correct application, light pollution and energy efficiency are of paramount importance. Effective lighting in the office can help increase productivity, comfort and provide an agreeable working environment, whilst reducing energy costs. Low voltage lightbulbs are perfectly suited to office requirements, and provide a much greater lifespan when compared to higher voltage, less efficient options. Exterior lighting presents a whole different set of requirements and applications. Installations such as security lighting, road and pathway lighting and illumination of commercial premises such as petrol stations and car parks all demand a specific lighting role. In all cases the most energy efficient option must be selected if lighting is to become as environmentally friendly as possible. Lighting Monday 28 February 2010 Lighting is one of the least energy efficient practices in the home, with a mere 10% of energy used providing actual light, the remainder providing unwanted and unnecessary heat. Coupled with the fact that lighting generally accounts for around a tenth of a homeowner’s energy bill, lighting is one of the least environmentally sound aspects of modern living. This need not be the case with the current available lighting technology. Energy efficient lightbulbs offer a better light/heat ratio, as well as reducing energy consumption by as much as 70% due to their lower wattage. Along with emerging technological solutions, some simple practices, like turning unnecessary lights off, can help make lighting even more environmentally friendly. |
