![]() Cleaning Monday 28 February 2010 When choosing cleaning services for your business, ensure the contractor uses the most environmentally friendly products. It is important to remember that no cleaning products, domestic or industrial, are entirely harmless to the environment. However, this should not lead to indiscriminate selection, as some products are far more harmful than others. Chemical elements found in some cleaners, such as phosphates and chlorine, are unnecessarily damaging to the environment when safer alternatives are available, such as concentrates, which use smaller chemical volumes. Avoid services who claim their products are ‘non-toxic’ or ‘biodegradable’ without further description. These terms are not legally defined, and are often used in the falsely, therefore offering no environmental benefit. Cleaning Monday 28 February 2010 All cleaning products actively damage the environment to some extent. However, it is important to choose items and services which cause as little ecological harm as possible. Therefore the best way to go about using cleaning products whilst remaining as environmentally friendly as possible, is to be aware of harmful chemical compositions. Be wary of statements such as ‘biodegradable’ or ‘non-toxic’ on cleaning products, as these terms don’t have a fixed definition, and in most cases are actually false. Try to avoid cleaners which contain chlorine (ie; bleaches), phosphates and other dangerous chemical substances. These toxins enter the atmosphere and waterways, causing both environmental and wildlife destruction. |
