  Cheaper energy efficient light-bulbs imminent?

Monday 17 September 2001
A major, and perhaps justified, criticism of energy efficient light-bulbs is their high price. Whereas ordinary bulbs sell for under £1, energy efficient ones are closer to £5. This has led to a small uptake from domestic consumers, and is undoubtedly the final stumbling block for the technology in itís quest for market dominance. However this is all set to change following recent advancements involving multi-layer reflective coatings and quartz halogen bulbs normally used in commercial applications. The new technique converts heat energy into light, making a cooler, more efficient bulb which uses 50% less energy and emits far less CO2. The process would result in a relatively inexpensive product if manufactured commercially, and could signal a real breakthrough for a currently stifled product.
