Monday 28 February 2005 Home appliances make domestic tasks easier and allow better access to commercial, leisure and educational opportunities. For the future, we need more efficient appliances, and changes in the way we use them. Appliances such as lights, cookers, refrigerators, washing machines, computers, televisions and videos consume around 25% of UK electricity. It is a fast growing sector - overall energy use by appliances, other than lighting, has almost doubled since 1990; around 50% of households are expected to be connected to the Internet by 2010. Market transformation is well under way. There are already major differences in products. The most efficient washing machine on sale in the UK uses a quarter of the energy of the least efficient and half of the average machine. It is a similar case with most other types of appliance. The Government has published specific strategies on lighting, washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers, in the form of energy ratings and efficiency costs. World Food Headlines
