Thursday 10 March 2005
The gradual introduction of environmentally friendly ‘wheelie bins’ will replace traditional refuse collection methods. The benefit to the environment is increased further with the use of new low emission refuse collection vehicles, which several boroughs are now introducing.

Wheelie bins eliminate the need for plastic bags, of which millions are currently used in the UK per year.
The new collection vehicles use natural gas which reduce levels of sulphur oxides, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydro-carbon and other toxic emissions by up to 75% when compared to petrol and diesel vehicles. Another environmental benefit is the dramatic reduction of noise pollution.
