Capitalising on the A2’s ultralight aluminium spaceframe, the clean diesel technology of the 1.2 allows the vehicle to achieve some quite staggering statistics, including a near 100 miles per gallon rating and a mere 81g/km carbon dioxide output. These figures show that efficient employment of diesel in cars like the A2 could offer an immediate advancement on current green motoring during the uncertain run-up towards a commercial hydrogen fuel cell car market, which some industry insiders claim could take up until 2025. The A2 1.2 TDI’s outstanding green performance is highlighted further by the fact that the most efficient band (double A) of the current government graduated vehicle excise duty (VED) allows up to 120g/km co2 emissions. However, the 1.2 TDI is only available on the continent, and not in the UK at present. Lukas Willcocks, who owns the only known UK example of this vehicle commented; “The UK Government should be lobbied to support vehicles like the A2 1.2 TDI under their Powershift scheme - without it a 60% reduction in carbon emissions for the UK seems highly unlikely!” Audi A2 1.2 TDI - Essential Green Statistics.
