Wallpaper

2005-02-28
Along with carpet and paint, wallpaper is a domestic producer of harmful VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions. In recent years, environmental issues have come to the fore in the wallpaper industry, at both manufacturing and consumer levels.

The major environmental issues when manufacturing wallpaper are ink discharge and general waste disposal. The bulk of problems arising from these areas can be solved with the removal of hazardous solvents from production. From a consumer point of view the biggest environmental issue with wallpaper is strong odour emission. New eco-friendly wallpapers do not have any noticeable odour.

Despite environmental advancements within the wallpaper industry, it is clear that the market is still largely price-oriented. Therefore a collective effort is needed, by the entire industry to address environmental issues and effects.
