Organic dairy produce is based around the same principles as all other organic food production – minimising the effect on both the environment and the end product. Organic milk is one of the most popular organic products. The fact that it is used in so many different products (cheese, butter, ice cream etc) may be the reason behind the popularity. All major supermarkets in the UK offer at least one organic milk line. Genuinely organic milk comes from cows that are fed organically, and are not given supplementary drugs. Animal welfare is a priority issue with organic dairy products, and good conditions are a prerequisite. Organic dairy procedures in the UK are strictly regulated by both the Soil Association and the Organic Farmer & Growers. Every aspect of production is covered, from feeding to transport.
