Green Electricity Advancements

2001-08-28
A recent EU parliament directive states that renewable energy will account for 22.1% of electricity used in Europe by 2010. The energy directive was initiated in May 2000 by the European Commission, and following a number of amendments and alterations the final draft has now been approved. The directive will have a clear influence upon demand for renewable energy, and is expected to be ratified, without further change, in September 2001. Governmental support to green energy increases the options for consumer choice, and promotes renewable energy sources as viable alternatives.

Along with the EU Renewable Energy Directive, Greenpeace and The Body Shop have launched the ‘Power To Tackle Poverty’ study, which shows how the employment of renewable energy sources can help poorer, developing countries.

It is clear that governmental infrastructure is required to introduce renewable energy sources on a wide scale, and current developments suggest that this is likely.
